These Muddy Buddies are my favorite version yet: rich chocolate, pronounced peanut butter flavor, plenty of crunch and utterly addictive.
If you’ve never tried Muddy Buddies — also called puppy chow — you’re in for a treat. The classic snack features Chex cereal coated in a smooth peanut butter–chocolate mixture, then dusted with confectioners’ sugar. It’s quick to make and needs only a handful of ingredients.
There are countless flavor twists online, from orange creamsicle to key lime, but this recipe sticks to the timeless original: chocolate and peanut butter coated Chex with a powdered sugar finish. It’s perfect for snacking during movie marathons, holiday gatherings, or whenever a sweet, crunchy bite is needed.

To make this, melt semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips together with creamy peanut butter in a microwave-safe bowl until smooth. Stir in a little vanilla for extra depth, then pour the mixture over rice or corn Chex cereal and toss gently to coat as evenly as possible.

Transfer the coated cereal to a large resealable gallon bag with 1½ cups of confectioners’ sugar. Seal and shake vigorously to coat the pieces. For crisp clusters and extra coverage, add the remaining ½ cup of confectioners’ sugar and shake again. This two-step dusting helps create the delicious clusters Muddy Buddies are known for.

Chocolaty, sweet, salty and crunchy, these Best Ever Muddy Buddies are an irresistible snack to keep on hand.
