We returned last week from a week-long stay on Kauai and were blown away by the variety of landscapes: white sand beaches, towering cliffs, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife. Even within the United States, Kauai feels like a remote natural treasure.
We wanted to do as much as possible in the time we had (you could easily spend two weeks here), so below are ten must-do activities and tips to make the most of your visit.

- Visit a beach (or ten). Kauai has some of the most beautiful white-sand beaches and clear water you’ll find. Conditions vary by season and location—some beaches have strong currents, so always obey posted warnings. Even if you avoid the water, you’ll enjoy surf-watching and year-round warm weather. Favorites include:
- Ke’e Beach: Located at the Kalalau Trailhead, this beach can get busy but rewards visitors with calm water and bright-blue coastal views.
- Hideaway Beach: A short, steeper path behind a condo complex leads to a secluded cove with dramatic access via ropes and steps.
- Tunnels Beach: Known for excellent snorkeling thanks to reef formations that create “tunnels,” it’s a great spot to see fish and turtles.
- Hanalei Beach: Popular with surfers and close to the charming town of Hanalei, which has cafes, shave ice shops, and boutiques—perfect for combining a beach day with a stroll.
- Eat shave ice. Order “shave ice,” not “shaved ice.” This local treat is finer than a snow cone and often made with natural flavors. Try guava flavors and macadamia nut ice cream in the center if available. Two local favorites are The Fresh Shave and Wishing Well in Hanalei.
- Hike the Kalalau Trail. The Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali Coast is iconic. The full trail is challenging and requires a permit, but many visitors opt for the two-mile out-and-back to Ke’e Beach. - Attend a luau. A luau is a quintessential Hawaiian experience. We attended a traditional luau where we toured the grounds, watched a pig being unearthed from an imu (underground oven), enjoyed local dishes, and took in a lively cultural performance.
